It is an undisputed fact that the bigger the dog the shorter the lifespan. Giant breeds like the Leonberger do not live long enough – any owner will tell you this. Science and research findings over the last decades have impacted significantly in Leonberger health, longevity and breed preservation. Breeders and guardians of this breed can make informed decisions, can run a range of health tests and help eliminate some inherited diseases.
Further research is currently happening around Cancer and Cardiac issues. There are two research universities involved – Bern and Minnesota – and between them there is a very large bio bank of DNA (Leonberger) samples. We mention this because you can help in several ways.
